How to Braid Hair

Learning how to braid hair is not easy, but with patience anyone can learn the process. Once you learn the art of braiding hair, you’ll be able to style your friends’ hair too.

How to French Braid Hair (Your Own)

Step 1

Grab some hair on the forehead or behind the bangs. It should be 3 inches long by an inch wide. Separate them into three even parts.

Step 2

Put your left thumb at the left section. The palm is facing front with the fingers up. Repeat this with the right side. Allow the center section to set on the forehead.

Step 3

The next step on how to braid hair is to make a fist at the left hair section. Position your hand so the fingers are resting on the head. Take the right hair section and put it across the middle hair. Use your left index finger to hook it.

Step 4

Leading with the right thumb, cut an inch of the hair straight across. Commence at the hairline and head to the center section. Hold the middle part. Pull it tight. The collected hair per section will be smooth and flat.

Step 5

Form a fist with your right hand. The fingers must face the scalp. When you study how to braid hair, you’ll learn the next step is to put the right index finger over the center section. Hook the hair in the left fist. Pull it out carefully, keeping the grip on the right hand firm.

Step 6

Allow the left section to dangle. This time leading with the left thumb, cut an inch across the head (straight). Gather the middle part and pull the hair. Position your fist so it faces the scalp.

Step 7

Reach out your left index finger and grab the hair on the right fist. Keep this up until the braid is finished. When you examine ways how to braid hair, always remember the middle and index fingers must be used to hook the hair. Do not use the thumb and index finger. The tension should be taut.

Step 8

When you get to the neck’s base, braid a tail. Secure it with a rubber band. You can conceal the tail by tucking it below the braid’s shaft. You can also add a bow.

Tips and Warnings

To make braiding easier, wet the hair. You can do it two ways: one is to braid after a shower, or you can dip a hairbrush in water. Use it to brush your hair. If you tire easily, consider lifting some weights.

This will give your arms the strength it needs. Some people also find it easier to learn by practicing braiding on their friends. If you want to try this, ten minutes of practice daily should do.

The best way to learn how to braid hair is to just do it. Just keep in mind that hooking hair is done with the index and middle fingers. The hair should also be divided and cut in the manner described earlier.
